The youth section within the Saint Mary Society and Band King George V Band Club, in Mqabba, are holding their eight annual exhibition during Holy Week.

Official Mario Zammit explains that this exhibition differs from others that are traditionally set up during these days. Instead of focusing on Malta, it celebrates the Holy Week as celebrated in another European country, Spain.

La Semana Santa de España features mostly the Andalucia region, especially the areas around the cities of Seville and Malaga.

The exhibition includes over 140 miniature replica statues of scenes from the Spanish cities, decorated in fine velvet and hand-made lace.

The concept was born in 2006, when Michael Chetcuti a Spanish Holy Week celebrations enthusiast, came up with the idea of organising an exhibition of miniature statues like those that are put up for view in the Spanish cities.

Nowadays, the exhibition not only features 140 miniature statues, but also 100s of photos of the processions in Seville and Malaga, and paintings, original costumes, medals and badges from the different Confrateros in the two cities.

This year happens to mark the 50th anniversary of the coronation of the Macarena of Seville, and a life-size statue was inaugurated earlier this year in order to mark the occasion.

This statue shows Our Lady in her sorrow, surrounded by angels, and was created by Michael Cutajar Zahra.

La Semana Santa de España shows until next Sunday at the Santa Marija & King George V Band Club, Mqabba parish square.
