She is Ukrainian by birth, but has spent almost half her life in Malta. And while music has been a big part of her life from a very early age, it is within the local scene that Dasha Britan first started to follow her calling.

Starting out as a DJ, she says the experience has been a lot of fun, but entertaining the crowds by playing someone else’s music was too easy for her.

“I needed something more challenging,” she says of her decision to make her own music. “With the help of (top Maltese DJ and producer) Toby, I was able to turn my ideas into songs.”

She says she feels more fulfilled doing it, and admits she is quite ambitious in her new pursuit.

Released days ago, Broken Reflection is Britan’s first release as an artist. Describing the single as more of a pop song, Britan adds that her upcoming debut album Faces will feature a variety of genres.

“There’s pop, techno and other genres too… a combination of the music that has influenced me over the years, I guess.”

The new single, which like the rest of the album was recorded at Tobymusic Studios, also features Skarlet vocalist Sandrina.

“It has been an exciting experience making the album,” Britan concludes, “especially because I was also involved in every step of the process, including the photography and video-editing.”
