In the words of former Rolling Stone associate editor Robert Greenfield, The Beatles are “artists who broke through the constraints of their time period to come up with something that was unique and original”.

Small wonder then that they are considered by most modern music lovers to be the greatest and most influential rock and pop band of all time.

Rising to stardom from humble beginnings, their legacy remains a constant beacon of inspiration to new generations of artists; their releases still clocking up significant sales to this day.

A compilation album, 1, was released in 2000, 30 years after the band split up. It was so titled because it featured every Number 1 single The Beatles released in the UK and the US between 1962 and 1970. It reached the top spot upon its release, becoming the fastest-selling album in history.

It is with this incredible reach of the Fab Four’s music in mind, that the Malta Rock Movement (MRM) has brought together some of the island’s top singers and musicians – 45 in total – to perform all the songs on this milestone compilation live in concert.

The concert, which will also feature a multimedia spectacle, is one of the 67 events being organised by the National Festivities Foundation, and is expected to be one of the highlights of this year’s anniversary celebrations.

Under the artistic direction of Pawlu Borg Bonaci, the concert is a follow-up to MRM’s production last year of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Specialising in shows that pay homage to timeless albums, MRM’s concerts are known for the diversity of participating artists, each bringing their own particular timbre to the songs performed.

Among the artists one finds Gianluca Bezzina, Ivan Grech (Winter Moods), Pawlu Borg Bonaci (Fakawi), Matthew James Borg (Red Electrick), Errol Sammut (Airport Impressions) and Gaia Cauchi.

The concert takes place on April 26 at Smart City, and entrance is free. For more information, look up The Beatles 1 Album Live event page on Facebook.
