Berti Quits: Newell’s Old Boys coach Alfredo Berti, given a hard act to follow when he replaced Gerardo Martino last July, has resigned after a third defeat in a row put his team out of the Libertadores Cup. The Argentine side, twice Libertadores runners-up, were beaten 3-1 by Colombia’s Atletico Nacional in their final Group Six match. “Today my link with Newell’s ends,” Berti said.

Rangers: Goalkeeper Steve Simonsen will make his second appearance for Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Dundee United after Cammy Bell was ruled out with concussion following a training-ground knock. Manager Ally McCoist said Lee Wallace (hip flexor) “would need a miracle” to make the game, while David Templeton (groin), Andy Little (thigh) and Lewis Macleod (illness) are out.

Fletcher: Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher is unlikely to play again this season because of his ankle injury. The 27-year-old Scotland international, who has missed the last four games, will sit out against Everton today and is likely to play no further part in the club’s fight for league survival.

Farnerud: Torino will have to do for the rest of the season without midfielder Alexander Farne-rud, 29. The Swede damaged his knee ligaments during training and the club said he will be out of action for at least four months.

A-League: Newcastle Jets claimed a 2-0 win over fourth-placed Adelaide United to go level on points with sixth-placed Sydney FC. Joel Griffiths scored the opening goal in the 21st minute before Adam Taggart sealed the win in the last minute of the match. Despite dominating possession, Adelaide were unable to turn their chances into goals, and they missed the chance to leapfrog Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney into second place.
