The Mgarr council said today that the embellishment project of the road leading to the Mgarr cemetery was planned several years ago during the fifth legislature.

This embellishment project planned to upgrade Triq ir-Ruħ by planting Cypress trees, installing dim lights compatible with the surrounding environment as well as the integration of the Via Crucis in one of the walls.

The Via Crucis, it said, was composed of 14 small bronze coloured statuettes measuring about 60cm that would be embedded in local coralline limestone rock slabs.

These would be integrated in the wall and would not exceed its height. They were donated by a group of residents a decade ago and the local council did not spend any public funds on their purchase.

The council said the MEPA process started in March 2008. The application was refused in 2011 and the appeals board overturned the original decision based on various conditions.

It noted that this project is not a main priority for the present council but it would nevertheless be delivered in due time.
