A man accused of sexually abusing 10-year-old twin girls was acquitted this morning after the magistrate questioned the veracity of the allegations made.
The sisters had told their grandmother they had been sexually abused by their mother’s partner, whom she had met at the Psychiatric Ward of Mount Carmel Hospital.
The grandmother reported the incident to Appogg but shortly after the report was made, the mother went to Appogg and said the twins told her it was actually her brother who abused them and not her partner.
When the girls testified in court, they confirmed that it was their uncle, who was 14 at the time, who had abused them. The incident happened in 2007.
When the brother was charged, the girls’ aunt testified that the twins had only mentioned what their mother’s partner had done to them, never their uncle.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli said a number of doubts had been raised in this case, especially on how the original report had been filed.
The accused had denied all allegations and the parents renounced all criminal action in spite of such serious allegations.
Faced with such doubts as to whether the allegations were made as payback for the report filed at Appogg by the girl’s grandmother, the magistrate questioned the veracity of the allegations and acquitted the brother of all charges.
