A woman who had been jailed for 17 years and fined €37,000 two years ago for importing 3.5 kilograms of heroin today had her prison term reduced to 12 years and the fine to €23,000.

Anna Spiteri, 49, had been stopped by Customs officers who found two laptops containing heroin inside her suitcase. She had just arrived on a flight from Tunis and claimed her former boyfriend had packed her bag and given it to her at the airport in Tunisia telling her it contained presents for his brother and their cousin.

The Court of Criminal Appeal reduced her sentence after taking into consideration that her testimony and help to the police had led to proceedings being taken against two other men.

Ms Spiteri was represented by lawyer Joe Brincat.
