Malta got a good ranking in the first EU transport scoreboard although comparing like with like is difficult due to different means of transportation.

The island was listed eighth among the 28 member states when comparing 22 transport-related categories. The European Commission pointed out that Malta’s performance was “also determined by the fact that the island does not have any data for various categories in various modes of transport”. It noted that “Malta is among the best performers for the environmental impact of road transport” due to a relatively modern vehicle fleet and a lower carbon footprint.

The aim of the scoreboard was to give a snapshot of the diversity of member states’ performance in transport matters across Europe, help them identify shortcomings and define priorities for investment and policies.

It brings together data from a variety of sources including the Commission itself, the European Environment Agency and the OECD. Among the categories evaluated are the countries’ access to the single market, the level of infrastructure, environmental impact, safety, transposition of EU laws, infringement and logistics.

The Commission said the Netherlands and Germany were the best performers in the EU in terms of transport followed by Sweden the UK and Denmark.

On the other hand, Greece Bulgaria and Poland were the worst performers. The Commission intends to continue to refine the transport indications in the coming years in dialogue with member states, industry and other stakeholders and to track the progress of member states over time.

Apart from the impact of transport means on the environment, Malta also obtained good results in terms of transposition of EU rules and lack of infringement in the sector. It performed badly when considering transport logistics and innovation. Malta was not evaluated in 12 out of the 22 categories in the scoreboard due to lack of data or corresponding modes of transport.
