In yet another exciting match, Birkirkara Go & Fun gained revenge for their first-round upset in the Mixed Teams League and defeated Paola BC away from home.
This win allowed Go & Fun to close the gap on the first two teams in the standings, Birkirkara Smart Office Supplies and Paola.
Birkirkara forged ahead by claiming the initial mixed doubles.
The game could not have been any closer but Klara O’Berg/Stefan Salomone looked more concentrated in the final points of both sets, ousting Joanne Cassar/Henrik Thomson 21-19 23-21.
Song Chen Jun made it 2-0 for his team by taking the men’s singles at the expense of Kenneth Vella 19-21 21-13 21-19.
Birkirkara made sure of the points when Jacqueline Abela DeGiovanni won another three-set thriller.
She looked confident in the first set, winning 21-16. But her legs seemed to tire out with Jacqueline Grech Licari taking advantage of the situation and drawing level, 12-21.
With both players giving their best, the third set could have gone either side but Abela DeGiovanni’s experience was decisive as she won the set and match 21-19.
Birkirkara extended their lead when Salomone/Chen Jun also won the men’s doubles against Thomsen/Owen Grech 21-12 21-18.
Paola earned a deserved consolation point by winning the women’s doubles after Cassar/Grech Licari teamed up together to beat O’Berg/Abela DeGiovanni 21-11 21-11.
