A priority boarding system is to be introduced by Gozo Channel Company that runs the ferry service between Malta and its sister island.

It’s an option that probably many would welcome with open arms. If you are a tourist and have a plane to board, you are guaranteed to make it in time. If you are late for work or just don’t feel like waiting, you can just skip the queue. It’s extremely convenient.

That said, where do Gozitan students come into consideration?

There is no place like home and, like it or not, most Gozitans consider Gozo to be their home. This means that they will pounce on the first chance to cross over and be with their families. After a week in Malta, all we think about on a Friday morning is making it to Gozo.

So, why should Gozitan students feel threatened by the fact that there are going to be 20 fewer spaces on the ferry?

And why should people who have €5 extra to spend be given priority over the rest of us?

It costs Gozitans €8.15 to cross over. Not to mention the amount of money spent on fuel to run the car. I highly doubt anyone would willingly pay an additional €5 to get home earlier. This does not only apply to students but also to people who work in Malta.

Gozo Channel provides an essential service for thousands of commuters who use it regularly. It has no direct competitors, which makes any additional costs less justifiable.

Priority will probably improve tourism in Gozo because visitors would be able to stay another night before going to Malta to catch their flight. What few can understand is why retain this system during the lean tourism seasons?

Economic benefits should not take priority over Gozitan students.
