The Malta women’s national team conceded another heavy defeat in the World Cup qualifiers after Pierre Brincat’s girls were humbled by Iceland 8-0 in a Group 3 match at the Centenary Stadium.

The Maltese came into the match in low spirits after they were soundly beaten by Switzerland 11-0 in Zug last Saturday.

Their hopes of a positive result yesterday were all but blown away by Iceland who were already three goals ahead by the 25th minute following goals from Harpa Thorsteinsdottir (2, 23) and Lora Maria Larusdottir (15).

Dagny Brynjarsdottir added a fourth on 33 minutes to put the visitors in control at the interval.

Thorsteinsdottir completed her hat-trick on the hour as the Nordic team sealed their pronounced victory with three more goals from Fanndis Fridriksdottir (64), Gudmunda Oladottir (87) and Brynjarsdottir (90).

Iceland go second in Group 3 on nine points, six adrift of leaders Switzerland who have played a game more while Malta remain rooted to the bottom of the group with no points from five matches.
