On my recent annual trip to the island I was pleasantly surprised to notice that, thanks to EU funds, many things seem to be improving from year to year. I say year to year and not day to day as change is better observed at long intervals, rather than continuously. Much remains to be done, such as the disgraceful state of pavements in so many places, notably in Sliema.

Quite a few pedestrian crossings are very poorly marked on the road and where they should have flashing light globes, these are generally out of order. Drivers, however, are beginning to slow down or brake when they notice pedestrians intending to cross.

If only they could teach themselves to use their indicators, especially on roundabouts.

And speaking of roundabouts, it is all very well to have signs indicating the direction out of every exit but these signs should be a good 50 metres prior to entering the roundabout and not just as one enters it because it is far too late, useless and potentially dangerous by then.

I am heartened by the positive attitude of the young, at least the better educated ones, but fear the constant point scoring between dyed in the wool PN/PL supporters as tedious.

This is not intended to be overly critical. I left Malta in 1972 but hold dual Maltese and Australian citizenship, visit the island regularly and still have a deep affection for the place. Long may it advance and prosper and may pastizzi tal-piżelli still be the standard bearers for all that is delightful and unique to that beloved slice of rock.
