Malta 18
Scotland 7

(4-2, 3-2, 5-2, 6-1)

Malta continued to fire on all cylinders at the 2014 Commonwealth Championships, currently underway in Aberdeen, after beating host team Scotland 18-7 yesterday.

This was the second victory in as many matches for Karl Izzo’s team following another comprehensive 17-9 victory over New Zealand on Saturday.

Yesterday, Malta’s top scorer was Niki Lanzon. He scored six goals against the Scots who had started the tournament with a 20-11 win over Wales, also on Saturday.

The score at half-time yesterday was 7-4 for Malta who had chief goal-getter Matthew Zammit on two fouls inside the opening minutes of the first session.

However, the Maltese made sure of victory in the third after banging in another five goals to Scotland’s two to open a 12-6 lead before the last session got underway.

Malta had Dino Zammit and Timmy Sullivan ejected for three fouls but Scotland had no answer to their opponents’ polished play.

That was highlighted by the outcome of the fourth session which Izzo’s men won 6-1.

Today, the national team play their third match in the tournament against Singapore.

Malta’s scorers
N. Lanzon 6; J. Camilleri 5; M. Zammit 3; C. Mercieca 1; D. Zammit 1; M. Stellini 1; G. Gabarretta 1.
