Balzan gained their first win in the Championship Pool after beating Sliema Wanderers with a stoppage-time goal from Spanish forward Jose Luis Armario Negrin.

The Reds had been under pressure after Justin Grioli had been dismissed for two yellow cards but, when Sliema were also reduced to ten men, Balzan launched a late barrage on the Blues' goal which climaxed with Negrin's winner.

The game took a while to get going.

Sliema's Ivan Woods had a low free-kick easily saved by Manuel Bartol after nine minutes.

Scoring chances were rare in the opening 15 minutes.

Glenn Zammit, the Sliema goalkeeper, blocked a teasing cross from Justin Grioli on 16 minutes.

With the two teams struggling for fluency, there was little in the way of entertaining football in the early exchanges.

Midway into the first half, Paltemio Barbetti's low free-kick was dropped by Bartolo with the ball falling to Woods whose effort was deflected to Ohawuchi but the Nigerian's close-range drive was kept out by the Balzan goalkeeper.

Sliema were now looking dangerous. They should have opened the scoring when Ohawuchi ran into the box from the left before serving the unmarked Woods but the veteran fired over with only Bartolo to beat.

Bartolo then saved a low free-kick by Woods.

Balzan made a reaction. They had the ball in the net after Darmanin, freed by Pedrinho, fired home but the Balzan striker was offside.

Darmanin then produced a fine volley, from Grioli's cross, but Zammit jumped to his left to push the ball away for a corner.

The Sliema goalkeeper again denied Darmanin when tipping away his header from Pedrinho's corner.

Early in the second half, Pedrinho was close with a free-kick but Balzan then suffered a setback as flank defender Justin Grioli was sent off by referee Sandro Spiteri for two bookings.

Pedrinho almost gave Balzan a boost as the Brazilian's dazzling run took him past a host of Sliema defenders but his shot was wide.

Sliema's Alex Podda, who had come on for John Mintoff, had a great chance to score but he shot weakly into Bartolo's hands.

To their credit, Balzan kept their composure. Micallef fired high from the distance while, at the other end, Bartolo stopped a low strike from Muchardi.

With 15 minutes remaining, Podda nodded over from Jacob Borg's cross. Eight minutes from time, Sliema defender Stefano Bianciardi headed just wide from Trevor Cilia's corner.

Muchardi opened up the Balzan defence with a surging run but his drive was blocked by Bartolo.

On the stroke of time, Sliema also finished with10 men after Clifford Gatt Baldacchino earned a second yellow card for pulling the Pedrinho.

Balzan almost snatched a winner in stoppage time as man-of-the-match Pedrinho who advanced before switching the ball to the unmarked Micallef whose low effort was inches wide.

There was another scare for Sliema as Pedrinho produced another solo run but his shot ended wide.

Balzan's improvement was rewarded in stoppage time when Pedrinho again made progress through the middle and, with the Sliema defence in a state of confusion, the Brazilian passed to Negrin who hammered past Zammit.
