James Ward will begin Great Britain’s bid to reach the Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1981 with a daunting opening rubber test against Italian No.1 Fabio Fognini in Naples.

Andy Murray is scheduled to take on Andreas Seppi in the second singles rubber today, while Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins will face Simone Bolelli and Paolo Lorenzi in tomorrow’s doubles.

As is so often the case in Davis Cup, tomorrow’s doubles rubber could prove pivotal in deciding which team goes on to face the winner of Switzerland vs Kazakh-stan in September’s semi-finals.

Italy will be equally determined to progress to the last four, having not reached the semis since 1998.

Davis Cup Quarter-Finals

Japan vs Czech Republic; France vs Germany; Italy vs Great Britain; Switzerland vs Kazakhstan.
