The drilling of an exploratory oil well in the south of Malta (Block 7 of Area 4) will be commencing in the coming weeks.

The well, called Hagar Qim, will be drilled to a minimum depth of 2,500m, as per contractual obligations between the government, Phoenicia Energy Company Ltd and Melita Exploration Company Ltd.

The rig that will be used is currently undergoing the final inspection and certification tests.

The Infrastructure Ministry said it was informed that the inspection and any subsequent maintenance work would be completed in the coming weeks, before the rig moves to location to commence the drilling.
