Baseball: Los Angeles Angels hitting coach Don Baylor broke a bone in his right leg while attempting to catch the ceremonial first pitch thrown by former Los Angeles star Vladimir Guerrero, and will undergo surgery today, the team said. Baylor, who is a former player, was in a crouched position when he took the throw from Guerrero. As he moved to catch the ball, 64-year-old Baylor shifted all his body weight onto his right leg and snapped the bone.

Tennis: Italy’s top seeded Flavia Pennetta crashed out of the first round of the Monterrey Open at the hands of veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm. The recent BNP Paribas Open winner, 32, was unable to get the better of the Japanese player 11 years her senior and succumbed to a 7-5 6-2 loss in north east Mexico.

Olympics: South Korea’s sports ministry has launched a probe into seven winter sports federations in a bid to uncover any illegal activities and recover public trust in the organisations ahead of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games. The ministry said the probe would look into the activities of the skating, ice hockey, curling, skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh/skeleton and luge federations and seek the cooperation of the police and prosecution if it uncovered any evidence of corruption.

Racing: Tony McCoy is unlikely to make a decision on his ride in next Saturday’s Grand National until the final declarations are made tomorrow. The record-breaking jockey is poised to choose between Irish challengers Colbert Station and Double Seven, both of whom are owned by J.P. McManus.
