2018 should be a memorable year for the Maltese islands. Among other celebrations and activities, that year will markthe 19th centenary from the martyrdom of St Publius, who as part of God’s plan, welcomed St Paul after the shipwreck and accepted Christianity.

I am aware of certain misguided polemics, but I must assure all readers that I know very well what I am writing about and can offer a detailed study in this regard.

I encourage the government, the archdiocese, and a number of local councils who have an affinity with our two patron saints, to organise a year of national unity and reconciliation.

I have some ideas that I am willing to discuss and develop with all those concerned. In my opinion, expenses should be minimal. All that would be required is Christian goodwill and cooperation.

I am giving early warning, as this would also be the ideal time to encourage Pope Francis to visit our islands to attend such celebrations.

All those interested can contact me via e-mail saidfh@go.net.mt.

We the Maltese can overcome many of the prejudices and should find this cause as a common basis for a major national unity and reconciliation that could be unique in the history of these islands.
