Two Pembroke Athleta juniors inscribed their names in the Maltese athletics record books for their respective categories during a Malta Athletics Challenge Meeting at the Matthew Micallef St John stadium, in Marsa, last weekend.

Luke Farrugia continued to improve on his best throw in the discus and now the new benchmark has been set at 41.88 metres.

Bradley Mifsud was equally impressive in the javelin competition as he posted a new mark of 57.19 metres.

Farrugia and Mifsud are both coached by Genc Gapi.

Meanwhile, another creditable result on Saturday came from Andrew Grech.

The Mellieħa AC long distance runner was representing the country at the World Half Marathon championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, and he ran the distance in 1:10.10 to set a new personal best.

Zersenay Tadese, the dominant force in men’s half-marathon running for almost a decade, was finally run out of the medals as he finished fourth in a race won by Kenya’s Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor in 59:08, the world’s fastest time this year.

In all, 113 runners took part in the men’s race and Grech was classified 99th. Four participants did not complete the race.

Giselle Camilleri represented Malta in the women’s half marathon. She completed the distance in 1:23.41.

Camilleri was classified 80th overall from 90 starters.

Kenya produced a totally dominant performance in the women’s half marathon.

Gladys Cherono led the way in a season’s best of 1:07:29 ahead of compatriots Mary Wacera Ngugi, who clocked a personal best of 1:07:44, and Sally Chepyego Kaptich, who also produced a personal best on a flat course in 1:07:52.
