Another two men were taken to court today to face charges related to the tampering of electricity Smart meters.
Martin Cilia La Corte, a 49-year-old cleaner from Marsascala, was accused of being a middleman between Enemalta personnel who offered tampered Smart meters, and potential clients.
The prosecution, led by police Inspectors Daniel and Roderick Zammit, asked Magistrate Audrey Demicoli to deny bail. Lawyer Giannella de Marco, said the prosecution could not argue that witnesses still had to be contacted. The investigation had been going on for quite a while and if any evidence had to be tampered with, it would have happened by now.
She said her client was categorically denying any involvement.
Inspector Daniel Zammit insisted on bail being denied, saying the accused knew who the witnesses were. The police had also received reports that witnesses in the case had been contacted and threatened.
Bail was denied.
In the second arraignment, Anthony Mifsud, 50, a skilled labourer at Enemalta was accused of accepting bribes and defrauding Enemalta. He pleaded not guilty and was also remanded in custody.
These are the fifth and sixth persons to be arraigned in connection with this case. Two have pleaded guilty and each been jailed for two years.
Dr Caroline Farrugia was counsel for Mr Mifsud.
