President George Abela laid flowers on the Freedom Monument in Vittoriosa this morning, accompanied by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition leader Simon Busuttil.

Dr Abela was accorded a National Salute and inspected an AFM Guard of Honour during the short ceremony which recalled the closure of the British military base in Malta on March 31, 1979.

A stone’s throw away from the monument, people could admire a black Vanden Plas Princess car which was used by George Borg Olivier when they were prime ministers.

The March 31 regatta will be held in Grand Harbour in the afternoon.
