Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant says the purpose of his candidacy for the European Parliament elections is to put Malta first and foremost.

He does not answer directly when asked whether it was a mistake for the Labour Party to have opposed EU membership when he led it 10 years ago, but says that what the party said at the time has been proved right. But that is now water under the bridge and Malta needs to make the best of EU membership and ease the burdens.

He also says many of the benefits of EU membership were overstates 10 years ago. He also thinks Malta rushed into joining the eurozone.
