Los Angeles Airport’s police chief has backed recommendations to beef up security after a deadly shooting rampage.

Patrick Gannon said he read the Transportation Security Administration report and airport law enforcement officials agreed with the recommendations, which include posting armed police at security checkpoints and ticket counters during peak hours.

The airport changed its policy months before the shooting on November 1, allowing officers to roam terminals instead of remaining at checkpoints.

A gunman targeting TSA officers killed one and wounded three other people.

Mr Gannon has said he did not want to revisit stationing officers at checkpoints because it was important to be flexible.

The 25-page report to Congress, which was obtained by The Associated Press, makes 14 recommendations after a review of security at nearly 450 airports throughout the US.

German strike cancels flights

Hundreds of flights were cancelled on Thursday after public sector workers walked out at airports in Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf and several other German cities in a strike for higher wages.

Germany’s largest airline Lufthansa alone said it was cancelling 600 flights, from primarily within Europe, as a result of the strike.

The Ver.di union said it held the one-day warning strike to pressure employers ahead of a third round of negotiations for 2.1 million federal and municipal employees.

Plane drunk woman jailed

A woman has been jailed for 10 months after admitting to being drunk and abusive on an aircraft.

Marsha Woodwart had to be restrained by cabin crew on the Thomson Airways flight from Crete to Birmingham airport on July 19.

Birmingham Crown Court heard the 41-year-old, from Cheltenham, boarded the Boeing 757 at Heraklion Airport.

Around 30 minutes into the flight, cabin crew were made aware of a passenger lingering in the toilet cubicle. Fearing for her health, the crew attempted to help but she shouted abuse at them.

Having removed the cubicle door after seeing smoke, they found Woodwart on the floor with a litre bottle of vodka and a cigarette.
