Cholesterol and obesity were discussed during a Heart to Heart seminar, one of a series, organised by Unilever-owned Flora pro.activ.

The seminars, organised once every few years, aim to address risk factors in the development of cardiovascular disease, which is the main cause of mortality in Malta.

This year’s seminar was led by consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Alex Manché. Talking about high cholesterol, Mr Manché said this could be sometimes reduced using plant sterols, which were found naturally in a variety of foods.

A Flora pro.activ representative went on to explain that the recommended amount of plant sterols consumed daily was 1.5-2.4g to achieve a reduction of raised cholesterol by eight to 10 per cent in two to three weeks as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Also present on the panel was State-registered nutritionist Alicia Galea, who focused on the complications of obesity, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoarthritis, diabetes and hypertension.

Losing weight and achieving the ideal body weight were important measures in the prevention of such conditions, Ms Galea said. Lifestyle and wellness coach Daniel Zammit spoke about the importance of physical activity in everyday life.

Attendees were invited to heart-healthy refreshments and to register for the Flora pro.activ three-week challenge as a natural way of reducing raised cholesterol.

Healthy recipes, a 50 per cent discount on a cholesterol test done at MLS Medical Laboratory Services, as well as a free session at Platinum Health & Fitness Club in Birkirkara, were offered.

Another seminar is taking place on April 7 at the Excelsior Hotel, Floriana, on the occasion of World Health Day. Registration for future seminars can be made by e-mail to info@mz.com.mt.
