Artists such as James Brown, Cameo, Herbie Hancock, Labelle and George Clinton, among others, may not really appear in the pop charts these days, but the original funk music all these brought to life in their heyday hasn’t lost its appeal, inspiring many generations of artists in their wake.

Locally, What the Funk has kept the groovy sounds of funk alive for three consecutive years by staging an event that blends live music with a party vibe.

And with each edition, What the Funk has been increasing in popularity to become practically the biggest live funk music party on the island.

This year’s edition will feature the participation of more than 20 musicians and vocalists, among them a brass section and two DJs who will keep the party going into the early hours after the live performances.

This annual event, the brainchild of musicians Mark Attard and Eric Santucci, seeks to promote funk music in the local scene, infiltrating the mainstream thanks to the varied selection of guest artists involved, while also working for a good cause, with all proceeds going to aid horse rescue association The Funny Farm.

Among this year’s guests one finds Olivia Lewis, Nadine Axisa, Glen Vella and members from Fakawi, Tribali and Red Electrick; they are all getting together to present one loud performance the way a real funk ensemble would.

The band will be dressing up for the occasion, so the crowd is encouraged to dig out their retro clothing and dress to impress.

What the Funk 4 is being held on Friday at Buskett Roadhouse. Tickets are available online. For more information, look up the event page on Facebook.
