They come from different sides of the musical spectrum, but this hasn’t stopped guitarist Christian Farrugia and drummer Paul Formosa from getting together to explore new sounds.
Under the name of They Come In Twos, Farrugia, formerly of Saving Alexis, and Formosa, who also plays with metal band Ascendor, have come up with a sound few local bands have explored so far.
Blending heavy guitars and drums with an atmospheric texture and an experimental edge, their debut single, Static Made Me This Way delves deep into post-rock territory, exercising the quiet/ loud dynamics that are synonymous with the genre, while the absence of vocals shifts the focus entirely onto the music.
The duo formed They Come in Twos late last year, after Saving Alexis called it a day.
“I wanted to explore rock music in a freer way, without the need of vocals,” Farrugia commented.
“I’ve known Paul for a long time, and when I pitched the idea to him, he was very enthusiastic.”
So far, the project is more studio-based, although the possibility of taking it to a live setting has not been dismissed; it will probably take some time before that is even considered.
“Right now, our focus is on writing and recording material, with the aim of releasing a single at regular intervals.”
The single was recorded at 3Some Studios and was produced by Dave Calleja and Kenny D’Ugo.
