A High Level Steering Committe Group has been set up to prepare a study on cloud computing, one of the motors of a strategy to be drawn up by government, Parliamentary Secretary Edward Zammit Lewis said today.

Addressing a news conference at SmartCity, Dr Zammit Lewis said the group will be exploring opportunity and benefits from national and European funds.

He said the committee would be reflecting part of the national digital strategy announced this week and taking on more entities to work together for the people to benefit more from the system.

In September 2012, the European Commission adopted a strategy for the unleashing of the potential of cloud computing in Europe. The strategy outlines actions to deliver a net gain of 2.5 million new European jobs, and an annual boost of €160 billion to the European Union GDP, by 2020. The strategy is designed to speed up and increase the use of cloud computing across all economic sectors.

According to European Commission statistics, Dr Zammit Lewis said, companies already using the cloud system estimated that their informatics costs had been reduced by 10 to 20 per cent.

The concept he said, was being given priority as the industry was at an evolution stage in the digital world and Malta could not remain behind. The government would be promoting these services in Malta to attract investment in the sector.
