The Royal Malta Golf Club was founded in 1888 by Lieutenant General Henry D’Oyley Torrens. He arrived in Malta on September 28, 1888 and within one month he had founded Royal Malta.

Sir Henry’s final posting was as Governor of Malta.

At the time, the then Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, was based in Malta as Commander of the Mediterranean Fleet and became one of the founder members of the club.

Hence the royal patronage from where the golf club gets its name.

Interestingly, Royal Cape visited the islands from South Africa during the 125th anniversary celebrations held in June 2013 and presented the Royal Malta Golf Club with a silver salver.

The silverware is now titled the ‘Royal Cape Trophy, General Torrens Medal’ and for the first time, was competed for this month at the Marsa golf course.

Sir Henry was an Irishman from Londonderry. So are Peter Coleman, the trophy winner, and John Fletcher, captain of the RMGC who presented the prize.

The presentation was on March 17 which, of course, is St Patrick’s Day.
