Former European Parliament President Pat Cox, now European Coordinator for the Scandinavian Mediterranean Core Network on the new Trans-European Transport Network and senior officials from DG Move, is on an official visit to Malta.

He will have meetings with Government and transport stakeholders to discuss opportunities to further develop the TEN-T network, supported by the CEF and other EU funds, and to improve the infrastructure supporting mobility in Malta and between Malta and Europe.

The TEN-T Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor is a multimodal corridor linking the major urban centres in Scandinavia to the Mediterranean passing through Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy and Malta.

Mr Cox is accompanied by Herald Ruijters, Head of Unit, Transport European Networks, DG Move and Leo Huberts, unit policy coordinator, Transport European Networks, DG Move.

Both worked closely with Maltese officials from the Transport Ministry and the Permanent Representation in Brussels to define the TEN-T comprehensive network.

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi hosted the delegation to a bilateral meeting, which was also attended by the Maltese officials involved in the development of the TEN-T.

Mr Mizzi spoke about the top three TEN-T priority areas for government over the next few years: sea transport, road transport and the need for strengthening connectivity between the islands of Malta and Gozo.

Hesaid the most critical traffic bottleneck on Malta’s TEN-T Core Corridor Network was the road intersection at Marsa. This section handled some 110,000 vehicles a day and provided the main modal interconnection between Malta’s core seaports of Valletta and Marsaxlokk, Valletta and the airport.

He said that this section of TEN-T was also the major bus corridor for public transport services.
