A 55-year-old man from Zebbug was taken to court today and accused of assisting another man to shoot down a protected bird.

Joseph Camilleri, a technician from Zebbug, pleaded not guilty to having assisted Lee Grima, 24 of Zebbug, who was yesterday convicted of shooting down a protected Black-winged Stilt, in Qajjenza limits of Bizebbuga. Grima was yesterday fined €1,000 and handed a three-month suspended jail term.

The court this morning heard that Camilleri allegedly phoned Mr Grima to tell him about the protected birds.

Camilleri is pleading not guilty to helping somebody hunt protected birds, and relapsing.

Bail was granted against a personal guarantee of €3,000 and a deposit of €1,000.

Police Inspector Jurgen Vella prosecuted.
