The Sunday Telegraph (March 23) carried a disturbing article on ‘guidelines’ being issued to UK solicitors on drawing up ‘Sharia-compliant’ wills.

According to the article, such wills would effectively deny women an equal share of inheritances and, in addition, would exclude unbelievers altogether.

These documents, which would be recognised by Britain’s courts, would also prevent children who are born out of wedlock as well as those who have been adopted from being considered as legitimate heirs.

Anyone married in a church or in a civil ceremony could be excluded from succession under Sharia principles, which recognises only Muslim weddings for inheritance purposes.

This has been hailed as yet another step in creating a parallel legal system in the UK.

Is this something else for us all in Malta to look forward to as we prepare for our new exciting multicultural future?
