According to the report by the People for Change Foundation presented to the European Network against Racism, African migrants in Malta are discriminated against as they suffer “underemployment”, and are channelled into second-class jobs, despite their qualifications (March 18).

Perhaps I am missing something here, but as I understand it, these migrants are of the irregular/illegal variety; most, if not all of them, destroy their documents before being rescued from the seas.

They do this in an effort to avoid forced repatriation should their claim for asylum fail.

Having thrown away their passports, do they, however, still retain documents which show their qualifications?

If they do, surely these documents contain enough information which could assist the authorities to repatriate the failed asylum seekers?

If they do not have any documents in their possession, how can they prove their qualifications and experience?

Are employers simply to take their word for it for fear of being branded ‘racists’ and ‘xenophobes’?
