Defoe: Jermain Defoe scored the only goal as Toronto FC picked up their second successive win at the start of the MLS season against DC United 1-0. The former Tottenham striker has started his MLS career by scoring all three of his side’s goals in their two games to date, bringing them alongside the Houston Dynamo and the Columbus Crew at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Salzburg: Salzburg won the Austrian Bundesliga with a record eight games to spare yesterday, beating Wiener Neustadt 5-0 at home in a stadium which was less than a quarter full. Brazilian striker Alan scored a hat-trick to send his side 27 points clear of second-placed Groedig and clinch their fifth title in nine seasons since the Red Bull energy drinks manufacturer took over the club. Salzburg, who have won their last 12 league matches and averaged five goals a game since the start of February, have 70 points from 28 games, with 98 goals scored and a goal difference of 75.

Ireland: Mark Hughes hopes Stephen Ireland will sign a new contract with Stoke soon. Ireland had to sit out yesterday’s 4-1 win at Aston Villa under the terms of the midfielder's transfer from Villa Park to Stoke in January. The 27-year-old has performed well for the Potters ever since he signed for the club, initially on loan, last summer. “We are very hopeful that something is going to be concluded very quickly,” the Stoke manager said. “He was really disappointed he couldn't take part today but we hope it will be concluded.”

Monaco: Monaco’s Ligue 1 title challenge all but ended when they drew 1-1 at home to Lille yesterday to leave them 10 points adrift of leaders Paris St Germain. Divock Origi cancelled out Mounir Obbadi’s early opener as second-placed Monaco moved to 63 points with eight games left. French champions PSG have 73 after beating Lorient 1-0 away on Friday. Lille remained third on 54 points and occupy the Champions League qualifying third round spot, three points ahead of St Etienne who beat Sochaux 3-1 yesterday.
