MEP candidates Kevin Cutajar, Miriam Dalli and Cyrus Engerer recently took part in a debate on Europe at the European Documentation Centre of the University’s Institute for European Studies. The candidates are former students of the institute.
They discussed topics related to Europe, including the phenomenon of the rise in popularity of the Eurosceptics, the possible fall in the number of ‘pro-Europe’ MEPs in the next European Parliament legislature, possible causes of anti-European integration sentiment, and the qualities the next EP president should have.
The candidates also fielded questions from the audience about their core areas of interest, whether politicians should shoulder responsibility for the rise in anti-EU sentiment, and about the MEPs’ high salaries in the context of austerity measures being taken in Europe.
The debate was organised by the institute and the EP office in Malta.
In another seminar held last week by the Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee, MEP candidates discussed the future of Malta’s agriculture with farmers and students at the Agribusiness Institute of the Malta College of Arts, Sciences and Technology.
