A first-ever English-Maltese Dictionary of Pharmaceutical and Medical Terms is now available for sale.

Compiled by Kirsty Camilleri with the collaboration of Ruth Bonnici, Miran Sapiano and Eliza Vella, the dictionary contains 15,993 translated terms, which resulted in 18,239 translations.

Sixty-seven per cent of the terms were newly translated and 32 per cent were obtained from reliable sources, mainly Joseph Aquilina’s Maltese-English dictionary and the Medicines Authority glossary of terms.

When Malta joined the EU, Maltese was recognised as an official language. Subsequently, all EU legislation, official correspondence and other documentation, including pharmaceutical and medicinal documents, needed to be translated into Maltese.

The exigency for translations was clearly perceived by the European Medicines Agency. The dictionary in fact aims at assisting translation processes being carried out with regards to medicinal documents.

The dictionary will also be available as an eBook in the coming weeks.
