The US Embassy, Euro Media Forum and Eden Cinemas are holding a discussion on Captain America: The evolution & legacy of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s First Avenger to coincide with the released of the new Captain America film.

Captain America was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1940. Known to comic book enthusiasts as The First Avenger, Captain America has been the alter ego of Steve Rogers, a frail young man who after being deemed unfit for military service, volunteers for a top secret research project. He is turned into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending the ideals of the free world.

The speakers will delve into the history and lore of Westeros and Essos

Comic book researcher David Pace and film researcher Justin Camilleri will give an insight into how Captain America was Marvel Comics’ most popular character during the 1940s wartime period. The First Avenger was one of the most powerful forms of communication and moral support for US troops during World War II.

How does the TV series compare to the books?

Both speakers will delve into how he was reinvented by Marvel Comics for the 1960s hippie era, and into his influences on other superheroes like Captain Britain, The Red Guardian and D.C Comic Red Star (both Russian characters) and his enduring popularity as a result of the films success. There will also be a Captain America quiz.

The Writers Club and Euro Media Forum are also organising Game of Thrones: Books vs TV series, a discussion about whether the series does justice to the books.

Season after season, Game of Thrones has offered up some of the most exquisite eye-candy of any TV series, and it looks like that the upcoming Season 4 will be no exception.

Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created for HBO and was filmed in a Belfast studio with some parts filmed on location in Malta.

Speakers Mark Abdilla and Adam Peter Fretwell will examine if the TV series does justice to George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, on which the series is based.

The speakers will delve into the history and lore of Westeros and Essos, the recorded history and all events leading up to the start of the War of the Five Kings. They will also explore the morally ambiguous characters; and the themes of social hierarchy, religion, loyalty, corruption, sexuality, civil war, crime and punishment.

To spice up the afternoon there will also be a quiz with prizes. The price is €10 per person, including refreshments.

Captain America: The evolution & legacy of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s First Avenger is taking place tomorrow at 6pm at Europe House, St Paul Street, Valletta. The Game of Thrones discussion is taking place next Sunday at 2pm at Palazzo de Piro, Mdina. For reservations send an e-mail to euromediaforum@gmail.com or send an SMS to 9945 4066.
