According to a recent report by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India entitled ‘Wine: Bearing Fruit in India’, India’s domestic wine market is growing at a rate of 30 per cent a year.

This is faster than any other alcoholic beverage in the country and this year’s current estimated level of 21 million litres is forecast to grow even more, as it is predicted to reach around 28 million litres by next year.

The largest number of wine consumers are from Mumbai, consuming approximately 32 per cent of that, with New Delhi and Goa both accounting for about 20 per cent of the total consumption.

The factors behind the growth are being attributed to a greater exposure to Western culture, global travel and experience of other countries where drinking wine has become part of the lifestyle. Also, there is a change in attitudes towards alcohol among the younger population and their disposable income is rising. It is also becoming more acceptable for women to drink wine.
