The Spectator’s contributors must be following the local scene as its March 8 edition had a piece which questioned the usefulness of televised political debates. This is what it said:

“Why do I so strongly not want there to be televised debates between the party leaders at the next election? I tell myself it is because these debates are so boring or because they confuse our parliamentary system with a presidential one...”

After last Friday’s Xarabank, it would be wise for the Maltese to be just as disapproving and particularly wary of the latter reason, lest we start believing ours is a Parliadential Republic.
