The Malta Amateur Athletics Association (MAAA) will hold an annual general meeting at their headquarters in Marsa this evening with the elections of a new council being the main item on the agenda.

After long-time association head Anthony Chircop had announced late last year that he was not seeking re-election after 18 years at the helm, there is growing interest to see who will succeed the former MAAA president.

Mario Bonello and Edwin Attard are the two nominees for the post left vacant by Chircop while Joe Crocker and Robert Chircop are contesting the election for general secretary.

Eleven candidates have filed their nomination for one of the remaining seven posts on the council.

Among them are former athletes Nathan Farrugia, Nicolai Portelli and Karl Farrugia.

Two members from each of the 10 athletic clubs eligible to take part in the elections will cast their vote this evening to decide who will lead the governing body of athletics for the next two years.

The MAAA annual general meeting starts at 6.30pm.
