The Athletics Committee within the Pembroke Athleta Sports Club have prepared a special programme of events to coincide with the 20th running of their popular 10km race, this year pencilled for April 6.

“This year will be remembered for the 20th edition of the 10km,” a club statement said.

“We have a packed programme of activities in our locality as we want to see the involvement of more participants in a family-oriented and fun-for-all environment.

“We also want to see more people practising athletics and this will be a perfect occasion for them to get introduced to the sport in the most basic form.

“This remains the primary goal of our hard-working and dynamic committee.”

The 10km race has always attracted great numbers to the starting line in Pembroke and this year will be no exception.

Moreover, every effort is being made by the committee to establish a new entry record, beating the one of four years ago when 1,389 participants were involved in one of the various events and activities planned.

A-Z Electronics will be the main sponsors of the 10km race starting at 8.30am.

A 5km run, which has the sponsorship backing of Vee Gee Bee, gets under way 15 minutes earlier.

An innovation this year will be the timing of the 3km Safari and Fontana races for children between the ages of 12 and 15.

These events will take place between 10am and 10.30am.

They will be followed by the Nesquik Fun Runs.

Inspire inspiration

The walk, held over a seven-kilometre course in the Pembroke surroundings and sponsored by Ecco, will see the entire proceeds go to Inspire.

“Inspire, the Foundation for Inclusion, has become a household name in our country for the useful and voluntary work in aid of those with additional needs,” the Pembroke Athleta statement said.

“We urge the public to contribute with their participation to such a noble cause.”

Athleta have always been to the fore in promoting sport as a way of life and this year, being a special edition of the 10km race, they have seen it fit to expand activities to attract more numbers to their locality.

Besides the races and events mentioned, there will be displays by members of the Karate Club, a mini-football tournament for young players and a novelty volleyball competition taking in family members.

Pembroke Athleta acknowledged the “support of the Local Councils, whose members never cease to provide support to make our sports events a success.”
