The Epson Moverio BT-200 is a piece of wearable technology that allows you to watch movies and play games while on the move. It’s the second generation of the technology and is much improved on its predecessor.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Google Glass is the only augmented reality glasses on the market right now. Other manufacturers are also hard at work building wearable technology and Epson is one of them.

The Epson Moverio BT-200 moves in a different direction to Google Glass in that they are obviously a wearable and ignore subtlety for awareness. The BT-200 includes two screens within the glasses lens that project semi-transparent images into them. This allows you to see the projected image within your field of vision while also allowing you to be aware of your surroundings.

The ergonomic shape and a weight of only 88g means these wearables are quite comfortable. They are adjustable and will work with prescription spectacles. That’s something Google Glass still hasn’t got right.

The computer is separate and connected to the glasses with a wire. It has a 1.2GHz dual core processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory. That is expandable to 32GB with MicroSD. It can project 16:9 images of 960 x 540 pixels at 24-bit colour depth.

The battery is a Li-Polymer 2,720mAh unit which is said to be good for up to six hours. There is also an AC adapter for when you’re just sitting around.

The system runs Android, can play MPEG4 and MPEG2 video formats and AAC, MP3 and WAV format audio. There are also a number of apps currently in production to add further utility to the glasses.

With Bluetooth connectivity, built in gyroscope and accelerometer, and Dolby Digital audio, the ingredients are there for a truly immersive experience. I will keep you updated when I get my hands on a pair once they are released later on this month.
