Gozo bishop Mario Grech recently visited Dar Dun Franġisk Grima, Nadur.

In an introductory address, Archpriest Mgr Jimmy Xerri spoke about the centre’s history and how it serves as an elderly day centre every Thursday.

Mgr Grech welcomed the initiative and urged the elderly to remain active and voice their concerns and suggestions.

He said the elderly had an important role to play in passing on their experiences and beliefs to the younger generation.

He then invited those present to raise issues they wished to discuss regarding the centre’s future.

Councillor Josianne Cutajar, who is also one of the members of the committee set up to oversee the organisation of activities for the elderly at centre, said she felt duty-bound to help the elderly and encouraged all those present to continue attending the activities organised and encourage others to do so as well.

She said financial constraints should not stop ideas from being developed.

Mgr Xerri said it was important as a first step to study the best possible use of the centre and that of possible further development, such as that of a residential home, a day care centre or a night shelter.

Mgr Grech said that while funds and viability of a project were an issue, the Curia welcomed opportunities to liaise with other stakeholders on projects for the benefit of the elderly.

He mentioned as an example the recent agreement reached with the Gozo Ministry for Dar San Ġużepp in Għajnsielem to be developed as a residential home.
