A record 4,200 children took part in the many sports disciplines offered last year by the Malta Sports Council’s Skolasport programme. Over 790 adults and parents also attended sports and fitness-related classes, a marked increase over previous years.

Skolasport programmes head Robert Portelli said: “Besides Saturdays, many programmes are being held during weekdays to accommodate a higher number of participants interested in learning new sports skills. Age and ability do not present a barrier as the programme is designed to give every participant the opportunity to be physically active while at the same time meeting new friends and having fun.”

Skolasport’s various programme modules are run at different venues, including the sports complexes in Cottonera, Marsa, Kirkop and Tal-Qroqq. Government colleges have also been roped in to reach a wider audience. These include St Margaret College Boys’ Secondary School, Cospicua, St Ignatius College Boys’ Secondary School, Tal-Ħandaq, St Clare College Girls’ Secondary School, Pembroke, Maria Regina College Boys’ Secondary School, Mosta, Maria Assunta Girls’ Secondary School, Hamrun, and St Theresa Girls’ Secondary School, Mrieħel.

With the final trimester approaching, Skolasport is accepting applications for the remaining places available for courses running from April 24 to May 30. The application fees are worked pro-rata per term.
