Malta opened their commitments in the EU 8 Nations tournament in convincing fashion after they cantered past Wales 23-8 in a Group B match in Limerick, Ireland yesterday.

It was a routine victory for Karl Izzo’s team who, after edging a tight opening session, completely overwhelmed their opponents.

After winning a close first session, 4-3, the Maltese team took control in the second, netting five times to go into the half-time interval 9-5 ahead.

In the third session, Malta produced their best waterpolo as they struck eight times to stretch their lead to 17-6.

The last quarter had little to offer as the Maltese continued to press home their advantage, wrapping up a comfortable 23-8 victory.

Michele Stellini was Malta’s leading scorer with six goals, followed by Niki Lanzon and Mark Meli who notched four.

Late result: Malta vs Czech Republic 18-6.
