Zombie action adventure The Last of Us survived strong competition to win out at the British Academy Games Awards.

The brutal PlayStation 3 video game by American developer Naughty Dog took five gongs, including best game, at Tobacco Dock in east London.

Hailed as the ‘perfect swan song’ for the PS3 before the next generation of machines gets into full swing, it was announced last week that Last of Us will also be made into a Hollywood feature film. Aside from best game, it won for best story, performer and audio achievement.

It was also a vintage night for the British talent behind multinational gaming behemoth Rockstar, which received the prestigious Bafta Fellowship and three awards for star title Grand Theft Auto 5.

The company's London-born co-founder and president Sam Houser said that Rockstar's success was down to the “passion for bringing worlds to life” of its 900-strong team.

Crime caper GTA 5 – one of the most eagerly-anticipated games of recent times – collected awards for best British game, design and multiplayer.

Another British success story was PS Vita game Tearaway by Guildford-based developer Media Molecule, which took home three bronze masks. The adventure game, which is about a messenger on a mission to deliver a unique message to the player, won in the artistic achievement, family, and best mobile and handheld categories.
