A young University of Malta researcher, Gianluca Farrugia, has been given the opportunity to participate in the Nobel Laureate meeting at Lindau, Germany, meeting the world’s top scientists.

The university said this morning that during the meeting Nobel prize-winning scientists hold presentations, seminars and discussions with young researchers from all over the world.

The meeting, which this year is dedicated to physiology and medicine, is aimed at fostering interaction and dialogue between Nobel laureates and young researchers.

Dr Farrugia’s nomination by the Malta Physiological Society was evaluated by the scientific review panel of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings, which then selected him as one of 600 from among thousands of applicants to participate.

“This is the next generation of leading researchers, who expect to gain inspiration from their encounters with Nobel Laureates”, says Klas Kärre, Professor for Molecular Immunology at the Stockholm Karolinska Institute and member of the Nobel Committee that chooses the laureates for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Dr Farrugia, who got his Ph.D. in Biomolecular sciences at the University of Malta last year, is currently a full-time research support officer at the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry.

His research work and publications chiefly involve the study of programmed cell death mechanisms induced by aspirin, in light of its promising anti-cancer effects.

“I’m confident that this experience will contribute significantly to my growth as a scientist. Moreover, I hope that my attendance at such a prestigious event will give the worthy research carried out at our University the increased prominence and recognition it deserves,” Dr Farrugia said.
