Maltese director Mario Philip Azzopardi was “honoured” to hear that a television series he directed was nominated for an International Digital Emmy Award. The series Time Tremors, which he directed in Canada last year, was nominated in the children and young people category by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Time Tremors is a cross platform game for children where mobile apps, web hunting and a live-action television series reveal an amazing mystery.

The storyline revolves around siblings Max and Medie Reno who are sent to a private school situated on a time tremor, a fault-line running through time and space.

The siblings discover they are the descendants of timekeepers who used the fabled Celestial Atlas to travel the space-time continuum protecting the universe. When the Celestial Atlas was stolen, the timekeepers dispersed the time treasures that are the source of its great power. The siblings need help from the audience, to collect time treasures and defeat evil.

“It was quite an honour to be nominated,” Mr Azzopardi said, adding that he was proud, given that the Emmy awards were open to international nominations.

Does he see Maltese films ever making it to such nominations?

He believes this is not possible given the current infrastructure.

Maltese people working in the field had the talent and the will but lacked the budget and experience on the marketing and business levels. To succeed, they needed to “think globally” and in terms of co-productions at this stage, he said. Mr Azzopardi recently wrote and directed a Malta-Canada co-production in Malta, called Saul, for a TV series based on the Acts of the Apostles. He is in Malta producing the Staġun Teatru Malti at the Manoel Theatre.

The Emmy awards will be presented on April 7 in Cannes.
