The eighth edition of Gaulitana: A Festival of Music was launched by the Gaulitanus Choir at Vini e Capricci at the Gozitano Complex, Xewkija.

The festival will span nearly two months, from March 21 to May 10. It will feature various concerts with a pot-pourri of musical styles performed by international performers at several different venues.

The choir will feature prominently in two events. It will take part in the festival’s concluding sacred concert during which two Masses by local composers will be performed. Messa Papa Giovanni XXIII, written by Joseph Vella and Missa Brevis In Honorem Johannis Pauli II, written by the choir’s director Colin Attard, will be paired together in a concert commemorating the forthcoming canonisation of the two popes.

The choir will also participate in the highlight of this year’s festival: the operatic production Tosca. The biggest project ever embarked upon to date for the festival, this full-scale opera, held in collaboration with Taormina Festival, will be staged at the Aurora Theatre on April 12.

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be under the direction of Attard whereas the production will be in the hands of acclaimed Italian director Enrico Castiglione.

Three Italian singers will head the cast: Norma Fantini as Tosca, Piero Giuliacci as Cavaradossi, and Francesco Landolfi as Scarpia.

Tosca will be the only festival event where admission is against payment. To book, e-mail info@gaulitanus.com, call 9920 9779, 9924 8963, visit http://teatruaurora.com or the Aurora box office.
