Do you enjoy carnival and why?

I enjoy carnival because it fits in nicely as a break in the stretch between Christmas and Easter. It’s also a good excuse to go out and have a good time. Nina Rosner, 20, BA English (Hons).

Yes, because it usually means spending a weekend in Gozo with a group of friends, which is always fun. Gozitans also tend to take the whole occasion very seriously, making it all the more exciting. Sara Vella, Mcast Btec National Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development.

Yes, I’ve always been a big fan of carnival. I look at it as a time to escape from reality and let loose at least for a weekend, and become a child again without being judged. Emily Galea, 20, BA English (Hons).

What did you do over the carnival weekend?

I spent the weekend in Gozo with a big group of friends in rented farmhouses. I’ve been doing this for several years now; it’s become a yearly routine for me. Nina Rosner

A group of friends and I rented a farmhouse in Gozo and we went to Nadur and a few other events. Sara Vella

I spent five days in Gozo with close friends, and we attended as many events as possible. It turned out to be the perfect combination of relaxation and fun. Emily Galea

A lot of work goes into carnival preparations but it often rains over the carnival period, so it can’t always be enjoyed to the full. Can you think of any solutions that would help people enjoy carnival more?

It would be great if more cultural events were organised, perhaps events for children, at indoor locations which wouldn’t be affected by the weather. Also, it would be ideal if a summer carnival was organised so that we could make the most of the beautiful weather outdoors. Nina Rosner

More indoor events could be organised and scattered around Valletta and Gozo. This would create more of a festival spirit without being dependent on the weather. Sara Vella

Unfortunately, the weather at this time of the year is unpredictable, although rain should not get in the way of celebrations apart from those concerning children. In case of rain, I’d recommend that the events are either postponed or that more events are held indoors. Emily Galea
