According to NSO News Release 043/2014 ‘Student Enrolment: 2011-2012’ 42 per cent of primary and secondary pupils attend Church and independent schools. In other words the parents of these children prefer non-state schools rather than schools run by government.

The question that arises from these figures is why such a substantial number of parents prefer to pay for their children’s education when this service is provided free of charge by the government.

Other interesting data emanating from these NSO statistics is that 50 of the non-state pri-mary and secondary schools are located in the northern/western part of Malta in contrast to the 16 located in the south/southeast of Malta.

Do these data about the location of non-state schools provide any indicators about the north and south divide in Malta?

The questions raised by these NSO statistics mayprovide interesting food for thought to the designers of our educational policies.
